The junction of the Bogd and Tsagaan rivers rising from Ikh Khentii Range marks the beginning of the Kherlen River. The Kherlen River flows 1090 km until the Mongolian border line and 274 km from the border until Dalai Lake in China. Although the river rises from a mountain range, the river flows like a steppe river. This is the longest river in the Pacific Ocean Basin and it shares 54 percents of total area of the basin. The drainage basin of the river is 116 455 sq km. This river is also the calmest river in Mongolia because it runs through wide steppe. It is 0.7 to 0.9 km wide. On average, it is 0.8 to 1.5 m deep. This river loses 40-50 percent of all water when it runs through dry steppe zone. Many rivers flow into the Kherlen River such as the Terelj, Khutsiin River, west, middle and east Baidlag rivers, west, middle and east Burkh rivers, Gyalgant, Shiregtei, Iluur, Dalantai, Yudleg, Zorgol, Khoroot, Murun, Tsenkher and Avarga rivers. The thermal regime is not the same in all parts of the river, for instance, the beginning of the river freezes more than the end. The river starts to freeze in October and completely freezes in November with 1m thick ice. Then the ice melts in April. The Kherlen River valley is rich with historical sites including the Gua Dov Ruins of Khunnu, Aurag House Ruins of Chinggis Khaan, the ancient inspection of Toono Mountain, south and west walls ruins of Khidan Tribe, Gelen statue, Ruins of Altan Jan Palace for Setsen King, Bars town III dated back to Togoon Tumur King, Bars town II of Khunnu Tribe, Kherlen Bars and other tumuli and tombs around Choibalsan town.
