The Buyant and Shar Us rivers rise from the south west side of the Khangai Range and they merge around Otgon soum centre. The Junction of those two rivers is the beginning of the Zavkhan River. These two rivers run through a deep valley with boulders and glacial deposits and further it goes through a deep canyon around the south of the Khangai Range. There are many glacial lakes in the valleys of the Buyant and Shar Us rivers: the biggest being Khukh lake with 20 sq km area. These lake are connected by rivers and as well some rivers start out towards Zavkhan River from these lakes. The drainage basin of the river is 71210 sq km. The Tatkhan Teel, Bogd, Buyant, Shar Us and Yaruu rivers flow into the Zavkhan River. The river runs through high mountains and crosses sand dunes and deserted areas. It flows into Airag Lake in the Great Lakes Basin. It runs through Yamaat canyon, a deep and straight canyon which looks amazing. The canyon is over 200 m wide. This canyon becomes 400 m high in some places, particularly around Taishir soum centre. From Taishir soum centre, the Zavkhan river runs through several sandy areas. The river has many deltas from Jargalan soum centre until the end of the Yaruu River. This part of the river valley is very swampy and is 60 to 400 m wide. The valley becomes approximately 30 km wide around Guzeen Teel. This is the river which runs though lots of sand dunes and sandy places. From the end of the Teel River the water level of the Zavkhan River becomes higher and it runs along a 1 km long and 250 m wide canyon. The river freezes in November and melts in April and it gets 70 cm thick with ice for approximately 140 days. The Zavkhan River splits in two at the end: one way is called the Setert and the other is called the Shant. There is an island in the middle of the Zavkhan river east of Sulin Adag sand and west of Khar lake. The island is 28 km long and 3.5 km wide. A hydro station is being built in Yamaat Ulaan Boom canyon 15 km from Taishir soum centre.
